This is a terrible tragedy but this is not the best or only way to go about getting a liver transplant. The best thing for Beth to do would be to go to an area where there are more organs being donated. Florida. California. Johns Hopkins even. You can be put on more than one list.
The waiting list in New York will be long and the people that will be saved is short because they just don't have the supply that is needed.
The waiting list in New York for liver transplants currently has 2138 people on it. I do not know which hospital Columbia/Cornell is affiliated with or how many specifically waiting on that list.
Last year there were only 266 transplants in New York. It would take 8 years for everyone on this list to get a liver transplant - assuming that no one else would be added to the list.
In Florida for example, there are 501 people waiting. Last year they transplanted 348 livers (one of them into my father).
Mayo Clinic - listed as St Lukes Hospital in the data transplanted 141 livers in 2004 and 171 transplants in 2003. And there are currently only 42 people on that list currently. Your odds of being higher on this list are better and also there are more organs being donated.
UNOS has a system that works, but you have to play the numbers. A patient is designed a MELD Score - which indicates the severity of the illness, the chance for surviving the surgery and things like blood type, body size etc. The higher your MELD score the more likely you are to get a new liver.
So talk to your doctors in New York and ask them if there is any reason why you should not be doing everything you possibly can to get a new liver. And if that means you have to head to Florida for the winter, it sure beats the alternative.
I am not saying that you should specifically go to the Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville but it is the alternative that my parents made and my father is alive because of it. The folks at Mayo Clinic are fantastic and my dad had his liver transplant on April 14th, 2004.
Best of luck to you and please consider putting yourself on more than one list - and choose a list where there are more organs.
I commend you for being creative about getting a new liver. But there are alternatives.
